Well Station Joey Scouts meet during the school term at the Downer Scout Hall or in the community. We generally have meetings on weeks 2-10 each term.

Program overview

Each term our program includes a mix of indoor and outdoor adventures. In addition to weekly meetings, we aim to schedule one weekend adventure or activity (e.g. a bushwalk or canoeing) and one overnight camp (usually held locally) per term.

Each term’s program is shared early in the school term, however activities are subject to change due to factors such as weather conditions, availability of equipment, or leader coverage. Any changes will be communicated to parents in advance, primarily via email.

What we do

Joey Scouts is the first section of Scouts for young people aged 5 to 8, and it’s all about discovery and excitement! We play games, do science, learn about our environment, and get outside. From building compasses, to growing plants from seedlings, exploring our natural environment, and singing songs together at a campfire, our Joey Scouts develop a strong sense of belonging and an understanding of the world around them.

Trained Joey Scout leaders guide our unit. The safety of all Joey Scouts is very important, which is why there are always leaders on hand during all activities.

Friendship & Belonging

Making new friends and building social skills are very important for Joey Scouts. For some, belonging to Joey Scouts provides an opportunity to mix with a new group of people, developing their confidence and ability to make new friends.

Adventure

Joey Scouts is often the first chance for young children to have a real adventure, like their first rock climb, canoeing adventure, a visit to the local fire station, and we love our overnight camps!

Leadership

Even from 5 years of age, Scouts begins to show young people how to lead by giving them the chance to play an active role in their program. They discuss the activities that they would like to do, and are supported to try out their independence and teamwork.

Badges and awards

Like all Scouts, Joey Scouts participate in the Achievement Pathways and are presented with badges to recognise their achievements. Our Joeys work towards their level one Outdoor Adventure Skills awards in the core areas of bushcraft, camping, and bushwalking. We also do activities that allow us to earn badges in cycling, vertical, paddling, boating, alpine — whatever the Joeys decide to pursue.

We also recognise our Joeys’ achievements outside Scouting through Special Interest Areas, where Joeys can earn badges by planning, doing and reviewing an activity in one of six areas such as sport, arts and environment.

Our Joey Scouts can then decide if they would like to work towards their Peak Award in this section: the Joey Scout Challenge Award.

Camping with Joeys

We try to organise one overnight activity per term with our Joeys. This can be camping in tents, or in halls as a section or as a group. Sometimes we do family camps with parents and siblings. Our packing list for these camps is here. We generally use group-owned tents and the group has a good supply of share equipment if needed. Camping is most fun when everyone has enough gear to be warm and happy.

Communication

The preferred method of communication with families is email.

How to join Well Station Joeys

Fill out the Join Well Station Scouts form or email the Joeys team directly at joeys.wellstation@scoutsact.com.au to organise a come-and-try night.

A potential Joey is welcome to visit with us for three weeks prior to committing to joining the group. During this time, we ask that parents stay with the youth. Once the youth have decided they would like to join, we will provide registration instructions and you are on your way! Information about fees is available here.
